The Buitenverwachting Homestead

The farmhouse was restored by the owners over the years and was transformed from a run down, almost forgotten house into a cozy stylish home. Even the old tobacco sheds were converted into packing facilities used to pack the fresh produce prior to distribution.

Where it all started
Strawberries as we know it dates as far as the 16th century. Already then the fruits produced by the strawberry plant were recognized for its flavor and brilliant appearance. Since the earliest times strawberries were used in breads, as dried supplement to meat and even for making wines. These succulent fruits is what inspired the Van Heerdens 14 years ago to venture into uncharted territory by starting to cultivate strawberries in what was then still known as the Northern Transvaal. The farm’s production expanded from a couple of punnets per day that were sold on the fresh produced market to up 300 crates per day during peak season which is sold to one of the leading supermarket groups in the country.

The farm is affectionately referred to as Buitenverwachting, which is Dutch and can be directly translated to “not expected”. The name was given to the farm during the renovation of the homestead and its expected hence the name Buitenverwachting.

Buitenverwachting is situated in an area called Mamogalieskraal which is surrounded by the Magalies Mountains. Mamogalie was a prominent tribal leader in the early 1900’s and his cattle grazed the fertile plains of this area and from then the name Mmogalieskraal was derived. The farm is situated 15 km outside the town of Brits area is predominantly a farming community and is home to some of leading farmers in our country.

Farming operations
Strawberries in South Africa cultivated during the winter and spring months. Historically Selecta was the most significant variety in SA but this is gradually changing as new cultivars that can withstand the harsh South African climate are imported from places like Israel. Currently Buitenverwachting cultivates the following four varieties: Selecta, Chandler, Edurance and Commitment.

At buitenverwachting we believe that farming with Mother Nature rather than against her will result in superior returns in the long run. Not only will that benefit all stakeholders but also the earth in which out crops are grown. This is however a long and expensive process because biological products are tested on a trail and error basis as there is very little legislation in especially the quality thereof.
Strawberries are the main crop at Buitenverwachting, however during the summer months when the strawberry production tapers down green beans are introduced to ensure that a sustainable business is maintained.
