An autoclave is a device to sterilize equipment and supplies by subjecting them to high pressure steam at 121° C or more. It was invented by Charles Chamberland in 1879,[1] although a precursor known as the steam digester was created by Denis Papin in 1679.

Uses
Autoclaves are widely used in microbiology, medicine, body piercing, veterinary science, dentistry and podiatry.

Typical loads include glassware, medical waste, utensils, animal cage bedding, and Lysogeny broth.[2]

A notable growing application of autoclaves is in the treatment and sterilization of waste, such as pathogenic hospital waste. Machines in this category largely operate under the same principles as the original autoclave in that they are able to neutralize potentially infectious agents by utilizing pressurized steam and superheated water. A new generation of waste converters is capable of achieving the same effect without any pressure vessels. To sterilize culture media, rubber material, gowns, dressing, gloves etc. It is particularly useful for materials which cannot withstand the higher temperature of hot air oven. For all glass syringes, hot air oven is a better sterilizing method.

Air removal
It is very important to ensure that all of the trapped air is removed, as hot air is very poor at achieving sterility. Steam at 134° C can achieve in 3 minutes the same sterility that hot air at 160° C takes two hours to achieve.[3] Methods of achieving air removal include:

Downward displacement (or gravity type) – As steam enters the chamber, it fills the upper areas as it is less dense than air. This compresses the air to the bottom, forcing it out through a drain. Often a temperature sensing device is placed in the drain. Only when air evacuation is complete should the discharge stop. Flow is usually controlled through the use of a steam trap or a solenoid valve, but bleed holes are sometimes used, often in conjunction with a solenoid valve. As the steam and air mix it is also possible to force out the mixture from locations in the chamber other than the bottom.

Steam pulsing – Air dilution by using a series of steam pulses, in which the chamber is alternately pressurized and then depressurized to near atmospheric pressure.

Vacuum pumps – Vacuum pumps to suck air or air/steam mixtures from the chamber.

Superatmospheric – This type of cycle uses a vacuum pump. It starts with a vacuum followed by a steam pulse and then a vacuum followed by a steam pulse. The number of pulses depends on the particular autoclave and cycle chosen.

Subatmospheric – Similar to superatmospheric cycles, but chamber pressure never exceeds atmospheric until they pressurize up to the sterilizing temperature.

[edit] Autoclaves in medicine

Stovetop autoclaves – the simplest of autoclavesA medical autoclave is a device that uses steam to sterilize equipment and other objects. This means that all bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores are inactivated. However, prions, like those associated with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, may not be destroyed by autoclaving at the typical 134° C for 3 minutes or less common 121° C for 15 minutes. Also, some recently-discovered organisms, such as Strain 121, can survive at temperatures above 121° C.

Autoclaves are found in many medical settings and other places that need to ensure sterility of an object. Many procedures today use single-use items rather than sterilized, reusable items. This first happened with hypodermic needles, but today many surgical instruments (such as forceps, needle holders, and scalpel handles) are commonly single-use items rather than reusable. See waste autoclave.

Because damp heat is used, heat-labile products (such as some plastics) cannot be sterilized this way or they will melt. Some paper or other products that may be damaged by the steam must also be sterilized another way. In all autoclaves, items should always be separated to allow the steam to penetrate the load evenly.

Autoclaving is often used to sterilize medical waste prior to disposal in the standard municipal solid waste stream. This application has grown as an alternative to incineration due to environmental and health concerns raised by combustion byproducts from incinerators, especially from the small units which were commonly operated at individual hospitals. Incineration or a similar thermal oxidation process is still generally mandated for pathological waste and other very toxic and/or infectious medical wastes.

Autoclave quality assurance

The machine on the right is an autoclave used for processing substantial quantities of laboratory equipment prior to reuse, and infectious material prior to disposal. (The machine on the left and in the middle are washing machines)
Sterilization bags often have a “sterilization indicator mark” that typically darkens when the bag has been processed. Comparing the mark on an unprocessed bag (L) to a bag that has been properly cycled (R) will show an obvious visual difference. There are physical, chemical, and biological indicators that can be used to ensure an autoclave reaches the correct temperature for the correct amount of time.

Click here to find AUTOCLAVES in Africa

Chemical indicators can be found on medical packaging and autoclave tape, and these change color once the correct conditions have been met. This color change indicates that the object inside the package, or under the tape, has been processed. Biological indicators contain spores of a heat-resistant bacterium, Geobacillus stearothermophilus. If the autoclave does not reach the right temperature, when incubated the spores will germinate, and their metabolism will change the color of a pH-sensitive chemical. Some physical indicators consist of an alloy designed to melt only after being subjected to the relevant holding time. If the alloy melts, the change will be visible.

AUTOCLAVES AFRICA (MEDI-CLAVE)

It has always been our policy to re-invest significant amounts of our profits into product development and manufacturing systems and equipment. Medi-Clave autoclaves are manufactured using ultra modern equipment allowing us to quickly respond to our customers’s demands for high quality cost effective autoclaves. We aim to have close relations with the manufacturing of all components utilized, giving us close control over the quality and manufacturing processes. At Medi-Clave we pride ourselves on our ability to introduce new ideas and processes into the autoclave market. Where we lead, so often others follow…

Some computer-controlled autoclaves use an F0 (F-nought) value to control the sterilization cycle. F0 values are set as the number of minutes of equivalent sterilization at 121° C or 249° F (e.g: F0 = 15 min.). Since exact temperature control is difficult, the temperature is monitored, and the sterilization time adjusted accordingly.

Waste Autoclaves

A waste autoclave is a form of solid waste treatment that utilises heat, steam and pressure of an industrial autoclave in the processing of waste. Waste autoclaves process waste in batches. Saturated steam is pumped into the autoclave at temperatures around 160°C [1]. The pressure in the vessel is maintained at 5 bar gauge for a period of up to 45 minutes to allow the process to fully ‘cook’ the waste. The autoclave process gives a very high pathogen and virus kill rate.

Modern autoclaves, also referred to as converters, can operate in the atmospheric pressure range to achieve full sterilization of pathogenic waste. Super heating conditions and steam generation are achieved by variable pressure control, which cycles between ambient and negative pressure within the sterilization vessel. The advantage of this new approach is the elimination of complexities and dangers associated with operating pressure vessels.

Road accident statistics show a staggering amount of accidents that happen on South African roads, causing a need for decent medical aid benefits or some form of comprehensive cover. Day1Health offers a very affordable healthcare package ideally suited for the person who is under age 55, healthy and needing medical cover for such eventualities.

The average costs to ‘repair’ and rehabilitate the victim of a motor accident in South Africa comes to just over R 100,000 per accident victim. Unless you have a medical aid, you could lose your home die a slow painful death, as the best medical care might just not be available. Our hospital plan is the least you should have to protect against these costs.

The Medi-Clinic group is an established leader in the private hospital industry in South Africa, commanding a market share of some 23%, nearly 6 400 beds and 12 000 full-time employees, more than 50 hospitals countrywide including Namibia., which is why Day1 Health is proud to recommend them as the preferred provider for our hospital plan.

Our Healthcare plan, option 1 offers protection against Day to Day types of medical expenses, including doctor’s visits, medication, etc. The monthly cost is R213.00 for the principal member, R155 for an adult dependent and R103 per child, with having to pay for maximum 3 children, as cover for the others would be free!

A Medical Aid has to comply with legal requirements in terms of providing minimum benefits for hospitalization and so forth, while a really cheap medical aid barely offer any real time protection when compared to our hospital plan, which provides healthcare under an insured basis, which has different legal requirements as well as for example no specific minimum benefits.

Medfurn Medical Furniture Accessories for hospital beds are needed to provide professional and needed hospital care to patients.

Safety sides on hospital beds are commonly used in hospitals as well as old age care centers. The safety sides for beds can be supplied in different options such as:

Telescopic drop down safety sides with a chromed finish. These sides uses aluminum slides to guide and support the safety sides. The aluminum slides are attached directly to the bed by means of a bolt or they are attached to a G clamp that are attached to the bed in such a manner that they can be detached from the bed easy. Because of the telescopic function the safety sides could be mounted to the bed in different length options with a easy shortening or lengthening of the sides by pushing or pulling. To have safety sides in the down position a spring loaded knob on the slides can be pulled that would release the lock of the sides so that they can be lowered, by pulling the safety sides up it will be set in the upper position.

The second option is a fixed length safety side with a drop down function and a chromed finish the same as the telescopic safety sides. These sides are of a fixed length that could not be adjusted.

Swing down safety sides are usually used on patient trolleys or child and infant cot beds. These sides do swing down from the top.

Fold down safety sides can be attached to the bed in a permanent way from the factory or they can be purchase separately and be attached to a hospital bed. To lower these safety sides to the lower position a safety spring loaded pin are attached, by pulling this pin the safety sides can be lowered in a fold down function to fold out of the way. The finish on these sides can be epoxy coated or chromed.

Bed elevator folding is used on old types of beds. The function of a bed elevator is to lift the bed at different heights either at the head end or the feet end of the bed. The bed elevator folds into a flat form and has plastic covered hooks for the different heights.

Bed blocks are square blocks with sinked upper and lower ends forming different heights to provide height options. The bed blocks are made from sheet metal with a epoxy powder coated finish. By putting the blocks under the feet of the bed the bed is lifted to a higher level.

Bed trays are being used for eating in bed. The tray has fold away legs for easy storage that stands over your legs while sitting in bed eating. A tray is mounted as the top to provide a functional place for the cutlery.

Leg cradles are available in the following three sizes: large used as a body cradle dimensions 800 x 660 x 400, medium used as a leg cradle for adults with dimensions of 600 x 660 x 330 and the small cradle used for children as a leg cradle with the dimensions of 535 x 600 x 330. The cradles are made from 8mm solid round bar with a powder coated finish.

The folding backrest are used in beds that do not have the function of a lifting backrest. This lightweight adjustable backrest are made from round tubing and welded mesh. The backrest has a epoxy powder coated finish.

Chart board with clip comes as a lightweight or metal construction and with a choice of a hook to hang on a bed.

Chart board and x ray holder has two open compartments and hooks to hang on a bed. The hooks are covered with a plastic protection to prevent scratching and noise. Mostly the chart board and x ray holder are found in hospitals hanging on the feet end of the bed with the x rays and file of the patient.

Chart board holder for 20 chart boards are made from mild steel sheeting with a epoxy powder coated finish and sloped top The holder has a sloped top and so formed that each file can hang in its own compartment for easy handling. Available is a mobile stand for the chart board holder for easy moving of the holder.

The need for sterilization by steam under increased pressure arises from the fact that the spores of many common and dangerous bacteria are strongly resistant to dry heat. The most effective way of killing these spores is by means of steam at high temperature and high humidity which will condense into their substance and moisten them thoroughly.

To bring about this affect all parts of the load to be sterilized (medi waste) must be free of air, so that it may be permeated by the steam and the steam must be not only hot @ 121OC or 134OC but nearly saturated; that is, it must be at a pressure so high that in spite of its high temperature it is close to the point of condensing to liquid water. Steam in this condition is termed “Just Dry”. Departures from this condition result in inefficient sterilizing operation!

Autoclave Pours Cycle Requirements: Air Removal:

The adequate removal of air is the first essential in the sterilisation of textiles; air is removed by a vacuum pump which reduces the absolute pressure of air in the chamber to a value of a few millimetres of mercury column before steam is admitted. This is often described as drawing an almost perfect vacuum, and it means removing more than 98% of the air initially present. It must be emphasised that during the preconditioning stage it is imperative that the set vacuum points are met via actual chamber vacuum and not via a timing source as vacuum set points are load dependant and load variable. Departures from the recommended means of measuring vacuum set points can cause inadequate air removal.

Timing: When the steam has reached the correct set sterilizing temperate, sufficient time must be allowed for the physical changes that kill the bacteria and their spores to take place throughout the load; it is these changes that constitute the sterilizing process. Times corresponding to different temperatures have been given by Perkins as follows: 2min’s @ 132OC and 12min’s @ 121 OC. To allow for deviations in steam quality a further (safety) period is added. Adapting Perkins figures (above) Medi-Clave recommend the following times and temperatures as a minimum: 4 min’s @ 134OC and 15 min’s @ 121OC.

Drying: At the end of the sterilizing phase it is necessary to dry the load without re-contaminating it.

The state of dryness of the load will be fixed by the equilibrium established between the vapour pressure over the load and the pressure in the chamber – the lower the chamber pressure the more rapid will be the “boiling off” of the water. At this stage practically no air should be present in the chamber. If dressings have not been made grossly wet by inadequately dried steam, the mere attaining of the vacuum should be sufficient to achieve drying without a need to maintain it! Medi-Clave found that with a high-vacuum sterilizer operated with dry steam, the load was back at its starting condition as regards to temperature and humidity, at the end of the sterilizing cycle.

Wet Steam is a frequent cause of incomplete sterilization (for medical waste). The need for sterilization by steam under increased pressure arises from the fact that the spores of many common and dangerous bacteria are strongly resistant to dry heat. The most effective way of killing these spores is by means of steam at high temperature and high humidity which will condense into their substance and moisten them thoroughly.

Wet Steam is a frequent cause of incomplete sterilization (for medical waste). It causes the dressings in the sterilizer to become soaked with moisture, usually early on in the sterilizing process. Moreover, the subsequent drying of the wet dressings is unaccomplished and it carries a serious risk of recontamination by airborne organisms that can re penetrate in to the pack.

Vacuum-Break: Air must be admitted to break the vacuum before the sterilizer is opened. This air must be drawn from a clean source through a bacteriological filter.

Weight loss in Teens has become a major issue since more and more people over the world become obese. Studies have shown that there are a lot of people who are either obese or overweight. People can blame it on the food being served in the cafeteria or the type of meals being served in the fast food joint but in the end, the only one to blame is the person.

This is because everyone has a choice whether to live with a good diet plan or not and those who are too heavy just decided to eat more than what is allowable.

Luckily, there is a way to stop this from getting any worse. There are doctors and dietitians that the teen can go up to help create a teen weight loss plan.

Is there one plan out there suitable for every teen? The answer is no. This will depend on the physical condition of the patient after an examination has been conducted.

One of the advantages of losing weight while the person is still young is that there are not that limitations compared to an adult. This allows the body to burn calories much faster when engaging in a workout or playing a certain sport.

Since physical education class is not enough to get those calories, the doctor can recommend that the patient work out in the gym or in the youth center. These places have the equipment such as treadmills, weights and other sports facilities that can cater to the weight loss plan.

Most people are advised to engage in a physical activity for 20 minutes three times a week. Teens have a lot of energy and it wouldn’t hurt to do this everyday. Since the body may adapt to the changes, the doctor may recommend some variations to help those extra pounds weekly.

The chances of getting the desired weight will not happen if the food being consumed is not being monitored. The dietitian must also come up with a program in order for this work.

The basic dietary plan is called the no nonsense balanced diet. This means simply getting enough carbohydrates, proteins and fats in each meal because there are many who put more emphasis on one or the other.

Having too much carbohydrates could be the cause for someone being overweight. This can be stopped by following a low carb diet plan where the patient will have to cut down on carbohydrates and replace this with food that is rich in proteins and fats. People will see results in less than a month and just have to continue to maintain the ideal weight.

Another option is the low calorie diet in which the teen will eat six small meals a day instead of the three that people normally practice. This is distributed during different hours of the day and is proven to works in just 14 days.

Aside from exercising and dieting, the weight loss plan involves getting enough rest. This will allow the body to recharge from the activities of the day to be prepared for the challenges tomorrow.

Overweight teens will not lose the excess pounds overnight. The teen can only make this happen by following the doctor’s advice with regards to the food being consumed and with proper exercise and a good teen weight loss program

One way to check on the effectiveness of the plan will be to go up the weighing scale. If it is not working as projected, perhaps the teen can ask for another weight loss plan given there are different ways that can make this happen.

Our bodies also react so much to the overdose of certain minerals and undisolved Salts that are available in the drinking water that the use of Water softeners have become a necessity for each household. No longer can you just open a tap, and drink what is coming out of there.

In trying to supply the population with clean drinking water, we contaminate the water even further by adding chloride and other substances into our drinking water.
A good quality Water Filter which is fitted with a reverse osmosis membrane can take care of all the unwanted salts, minerals, bacteria and substances which is harmfull to your body.

The type of water filtering system that you choose can make the difference in your life. There are so many inadequate filtering systems and Water softeners on the market today that it might be difficult to choose. But if you need good water quality, you need a good filtration system.

Almost 108 million Americans were overweight or obese in 1999. Until now, obesity continues to be a serious problem and is predicted to reach epidemic levels by the year 2020. One way to prevent this scenario is to make people aware of the risks of being overweight or obese.

Here are some diseases that you are putting yourself in risk of if you are carrying a lot of extra pounds:

1. heart disease
2. stroke
3. diabetes
4. cancer
5. arthritis
6. hypertension

Healthy Weight Loss helps to prevent and control these diseases.

The quick weight loss methods which have spread like fire these days do not provide lasting results. More often than not, dieting methods which involve dietary drinks, foods and supplement or pills do not work. If they do, the results are just temporary.

It is better to rely on a healthy weight loss option which will provide lifetime results. You have to set realistic goals and not expect to lose a lot of pounds in a short span of time.

Here are some tips for a Rapid Weight Loss:

1. Do not starve your self.

The key to a healthier way of losing weight is: Do not diet.

You may seem happy and feel that you are losing those unwanted flabs on your belly and thighs by skipping meals. But remember that this would not last long. Your body cannot tolerate having insufficient food to fuel the energy that you use up everyday.

If you get used to skipping one or two meals a day, your stored calories will be used up instead of the energy that should have been provided by your meals. So if you just eat one huge sandwich in one day, it will end up straight to your problem area (i.e. highs, buttocks, hips).

2. Start your day right.

Mothers always say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Have a healthy meal in the morning to jump-start your metabolism.

Your food intake after you wake up will be used to burn fat all day long.

3. Eat small, healthy meals frequently.

Five small-serving snacks per day is better than three hearty meals. Eating more frequently, and in small servings, can prevent over-eating. This will also increase your metabolism and make calories burn faster.

4. Decide on how much weight you want to lose.

Keep your goals realistic. In the long run, it is virtually impossible for you to lose 40 pounds in 2 weeks. Have a mindset that you want to eat healthy to stay healthy for the rest of your life.

Once you have decided on a weight loss plan or program, stick to it and make sure that you follow your own set of dieting rules.

5. Drink lots of water.

Your body needs sufficient water to burn fat and keep your cells hydrated and healthy.

6. Avoid too much sugar.

Plan your meals around lots of fruits and vegetables, some bread, rice or pasta for that carbo fix that you need, plus lean meat and protein rich-foods. Sweets, sodas and pastries should be once-in-a-while indulgences only.

7. Watch your fat intake.

Fat is not the culprit to being overweight. You need this to keep your weight at the proper level.

There is such a thing as healthy fats. Olive, peanuts and canola oil have them. Tuna, salmon and mackerel have omega-3 fats which is good for the heart.

8. Exercise.

Leave your car if you are only going a few blocks from home, take the stairs instead of the elevator, jog, cycle or skate. Use these activites and other home chores if you are too lazy to go to the gym and take exercise classes. Make sure that you do this regularly and you will not even notice that you are already shedding pounds with these mundane activities.

It does not matter how much weight you plan or need to lose. What is important is that you set realistic goals for yourself.

Go slow. If you have already lost 5 or 6 pounds, give yourself a break then try to lose the next 5 pounds.

Eat healthy, drink lots of water, have enough sleep and exercise. This will give you a higher chance of losing weight and improving your health, which would result to a new, healthier you.

One of the main reasons for heart problems is cholesterol and many people die every due to this disease. Although cholesterol is a great contributor to heart disease, there are many other causes as well. Checking your cholesterol levels on a regular basis can help you to prevent you from getting heart disease.

Keeping yourself healthy and testing your cholesterol on a regular basis is the best thing that you can do for yourself. Many people may believe that that there is only one type of cholesterol, but there are actually two types of cholesterol which includes one that is bad and one that is good. All types of cholesterol are not bad for you.

LDL Cholesterol is the first type of cholesterol. LDL Cholesterol is the bad type of cholesterol and you need to ensure that your LDL Cholesterol levels are as low as possible. This type of cholesterol builds up in the artery walls which cause blockages. Cholesterol which builds up in the arteries causes your heart to work harder.

Various heart diseases and even heart attacks are caused by high LDL cholesterol levels. When your LDL cholesterol levels are higher, the risk of getting a heart attack is much higher than any other type of heart disease.

HDL Cholesterol is the other type of cholesterol which is the good type of cholesterol. Basically this is a molecule that has proteins in its composition. The HDL cholesterol actually helps fighting and breaking off the bad cholesterol in a persons body.

A Blood test is how you test your cholesterol levels. If you want to know your cholesterol count, you can visit your general practitioner to do a blood test. If you are a man in your early forties or fifties it is essential that you do the cholesterol tests on a regular basis.

High LDL cholesterol count in your blood means that you need to do some exercises and also start eating a healthier diet. This can help you to lower your cholesterol levels. Cholesterol diets should consist of a good eating plan and should exclude animal fats and definitely dairy products.

Maybe you are so used to eating unhealthy foods that you maybe do not recognize it anymore. When you prepare your meals make sure that you know how much fat you are taking in. Look for fat free or low fat products. You can benefit a lot with looking at this in your low fat diet or cholesterol lowering recipies
